The Big Online College Comparison: WGU vs SNHU vs Purdue Global vs UMGC — What's Actually Different?

If you've spent more than ten minutes researching online degrees, you've almost certainly come across the same four names over and over: Western Governors University, Southern New Hampshire University, Purdue Global, and the University of Maryland Global Campus. These four schools dominate the online space, and for good reason — they're all regionally accredited, widely recognised by employers, and built specifically around working adults.

But they're not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one for your situation can cost you time, money, and frustration. Here's an honest breakdown of what makes each one different.

Western Governors University (WGU)

WGU is unlike every other school on this list because it runs on a competency-based model rather than a credit-hour model. That means you're not paying per course or sitting through a fixed number of weeks — you're demonstrating mastery of skills through assessments, and you can move as fast as you can prove competency. If you already know the material, you can potentially complete courses in days rather than months.

Tuition is charged per six-month term (roughly $3,500–$4,500 depending on the programme), not per credit, so the faster you move, the less you pay overall. WGU is particularly well regarded in IT (the cybersecurity and cloud programmes are strong), nursing, teaching, and business. It accepts transfer credits generously and has articulation agreements with many community colleges.

The trade-off: WGU requires significant self-discipline and independent motivation. There are no traditional lectures and limited peer interaction. If you struggle to self-direct your learning, the flexibility can work against you. Also, some graduate programmes and professional licensing bodies are still not fully familiar with the competency-based model, so verify acceptance in your specific field before enrolling.

Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU)

SNHU is the largest online university in the country by enrolment, which tells you something about its accessibility and marketing reach. It runs on a traditional credit-hour model with eight-week accelerated terms, and courses are fully asynchronous — you work around your schedule within weekly deadlines. Tuition for undergraduate online programmes sits around $330 per credit, which is competitive without being the absolute cheapest option available.

SNHU's programme catalogue is broad, which is both a strength and a weakness. The business, creative writing, and liberal arts programmes have a solid reputation. The IT and healthcare programmes are adequate. But "broad" can also mean "generalist," and in some specialised fields you'll find stronger options elsewhere.

SNHU invests heavily in student support services — advisors, tutoring, writing centres, career coaching — and for many students this makes a real difference, particularly those who are returning to education after a long gap. Where they get legitimately criticised is in the aggressiveness of their sales team at the application stage. Don't let an enrolment counsellor pressure you into committing before you've compared your options.

Purdue Global

Purdue Global is the online arm of the Purdue University system, which gives it a certain brand recognition — particularly useful if you're going into fields where the Purdue name carries weight. It operates on a quarter system with ten-week terms and charges per credit, typically around $370–$409 depending on the programme and level.

One notable feature is the Purdue Global Commitment, which guarantees tuition locked at the rate from when you enrolled, so there are no surprise increases mid-degree. The nursing, criminal justice, and IT programmes are among its strongest, and the school has Servicemember Opportunity College accreditation, making it a popular choice for military-affiliated students.

Worth noting: Purdue Global has faced scrutiny in the past over its origins as Kaplan University (a for-profit institution) before being acquired by the Purdue system in 2018. Accreditation and outcomes have improved significantly since the transition, but it's worth being aware of that history when reading older reviews or forum discussions about the school.

University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC)

UMGC is a public university — part of the University System of Maryland — which gives it a different pricing structure to the others. Undergraduate tuition for in-state Maryland students is around $324 per credit; out-of-state students pay more, though UMGC offers reduced rates to active military and veterans. For Maryland residents in particular, this can make it genuinely one of the most affordable options on the market.

UMGC has a long history of serving adult and military learners specifically, and it shows in the course structure — asynchronous, flexible, and designed for people juggling work and family. The business, cybersecurity, and data analytics programmes are strong. Library access is excellent. The academic advising quality varies quite a bit depending on the programme, which is the most consistent complaint from current and former students.

So which one is right for you?

There's no universal answer, but here are some useful starting points. If you already have substantial knowledge in your field and want to move fast and cheap, look hard at WGU. If you're returning to education after years away and want strong support structures and flexibility, SNHU is worth a serious look. If you're a Maryland resident or military-affiliated, run the numbers on UMGC before anything else. If the Purdue brand matters in your industry or you're going into nursing, Purdue Global belongs on your shortlist.

Whatever you decide, get a transfer credit evaluation from all schools you're seriously considering before you commit. The differences in how many credits each school accepts can change the total cost and timeline dramatically — sometimes by thousands of dollars and a full year of study.
